Top 4 Interior Design Trends We’re Seeing Now

Updated on 9-9-24

So, what’s hot for your home in the coming months? Think colors, cozy, and computers. Wait, computers? Yep, keep reading, and you’ll see what we mean. Let’s dive right in—here are the top four interior design trends our Toulmin Kitchen & Bath team expects to see more of in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham homes this year.

Design Trend #1: All White? Not Anymore!

Don’t get us wrong—we love crisp, white kitchens and bathrooms. But now it’s all about adding unique pops of color to your Alabama home. So, how can you easily add color to a currently all-white space? Try these fun, creative ideas:

  • Create an accent wall with colorful paint.

  • Use colorful tiles in a backsplash.

  • Paint your lower cabinets or island a different color than your upper cabinets.

Still trying to decide what color to use to brighten up your all-white space? Try one of these top trending paint colors. This year, the most popular interior colors are cool blues, greens, and shades with pink undertones. Any of these options will add a pop of color and new life to your white space!

Design Trend #2: Create An Ideal Work-From-Home Space

Your Zoom background is about to get the ultimate upgrade in 2023. It’s becoming more common for people to work from home part-time or full-time, which has spawned a demand for dedicated WFH office spaces in many Alabama homes.

Maybe you already love everything about where you live. But is it possible to love the same space if it also serves as a primary work area? Here are some tips to freshen up your home office and transform it into an ideal work-from-home space that will work well for you:

  • Consider installing custom cabinetry, storage, desks, and other work areas that are specifically designed to meet your WFH needs

  • Maximize your existing space by going vertical with shelving and office decor

  • Use a statement wallpaper to make the space more exciting and personal. You can install wallpaper on one wall, multiple walls, or even the ceiling.

Home offices come in all shapes and sizes. With the right design, you can absolutely love where you live, work, and play—even if those spaces are all under the same roof.

Design Trend #3: Add Cozy Charm In Natural Ways

What’s an easy way to add warmth and cozy charm to a space? Natural wood elements! There are various ways to add wood to spaces without making them seem too rustic. Here are a few fun ideas you can try:

  • Add a set of beautiful, wood double doors at the entrance of your home.

  • Install thoughtfully designed cabinets finished in a show-stopping wood stain to highlight the wood’s natural grain.

  • Incorporate hints of wood throughout a kitchen design. You might add a natural wood kitchen island or trim a range hood in raw or stained wood. Open shelving is also great for incorporating natural wood elements into your design.

  • If you like to change up the look of your room often, consider adding furniture pieces or decor that add warmth and complement a non-wood space.

Due to its design and neutral tone, wood easily blends with other elements in a house. Mixing in wood here and there is an easy way to update your home without completely remodeling the space.

Design Trend #4: Make Simple Changes to Warm Up Your Space

We know, we know…we JUST recently wrote about how the dark academia trend is taking over. Oh, don’t get us wrong, moody rooms still have their place. But now warm trends are emerging for kitchens and other spaces, too!

Adding warmth to a space can be pretty simple when redesigning a room. Here are some simple ways to warm up your current space:

  • Choose neutral or warm tones for your wall color and even cabinetry

  • Add natural elements (like wood!) to any space (think accessories, open shelving, and small furniture)

  • Change up your flooring or add a rug to bring in texture that creates a warm and cozy space
