Window Replacement Installation: Here’s What to Expect

So, you’ve decided it’s time for windows. Congratulations! Now, do you know what happens next?

The truth is that installing replacement windows is time-consuming and can be expensive. But when the process is completed correctly, your new windows will add beauty, functionality, and value to your home.

Since most Alabama homeowners only go through the window replacement process once or twice, you may not know what to expect. Your local windows and doors experts at Toulmin Kitchen & Bath prepared this guide to help you know what to expect and to ensure everything goes smoothly during your upcoming window replacement installation.

Starting the Window Replacement Process

Replacement windows are not just a home improvement. They are an investment. They can significantly improve your home's energy efficiency, enhance safety and security, increase property value, and help you realize your dream home.

Before starting the actual window replacement process, you'll want to do a little research. As with any home improvement project, knowledge is power. You want to know all the steps and understand the process to make an informed decision.

The first step is selecting the windows that will work best for your home aesthetically and functionally. You can look at websites and home magazines for inspiration based on your home's architectural style and your personal taste. If you're unsure how to proceed, your installation company can help. They can show you your options and help you choose the perfect window to meet your needs.

Before the Installers Arrive

Once you have chosen your replacement windows, you'll need to confirm the date and time of installation. Before your window installers arrive, you'll want to take a few steps to ensure your window replacement installation goes smoothly.

Clearly mark any original or special windows you’d like saved.

If there are any windows, like original stained or leaded glass windows, that you'd like saved, make sure you mark them.

Please make sure children and pets are in a safe place.

While generally quick, the replacement window installation process can be disruptive, especially if you have kids or pets. You might want to have them cared for in a separate location during the installation process. Kids or pets roaming around the house can get in the way and potentially get injured. Lock away any small valuables or fragile items and cover large items that can't be moved away from the windows.

Beginning the Installation Process

After choosing your replacement windows and scheduling installation, it's time to consider the installation methods and options for putting your new windows in place. The complexity of your window replacement project will determine the best installation method for you.

For example, a pocket window installation is the easiest option when replacing a casement window. However, if you’re looking for a more complex upgrade, like adding a bay or bow window in the kitchen, you'll need to look into a full-frame installation. Full-frame installation takes more time and is more labor-intensive as it requires work inside and outside your house. However, it also allows for greater flexibility.

How Long Does The Window Replacement Process Take?

Most window replacement projects can be accomplished in a single day. However, if your project is particularly complex or you choose the option of full-frame replacements, installation may extend into a second day.

Window Replacement Installation: Day One

It’s always a good idea for the homeowner to be on-site the day of installation; that way, you can answer any questions your crew might have. If you work from home and have a home office, ask the installers to start with the windows closest to your work area so you can return to work quickly.

You must trust the company you have chosen to do the work. The best way to manage your project is to let your window installers do their job and stay out of the way. Staying within calling distance is a good idea, but remember to allow them the room to do their work.

Here’s what you can expect on the first day of your window replacement installation:

  • You’ll meet the project manager and walk through your home before work begins. Review each window to ensure everything is in place and ready.

  • Check that the window installers have taken the proper precautions to protect your home and that drop cloths have been placed to protect your belongings.

  • Ask that additional drop cloths be placed outside to protect your landscape if you have flower beds or landscaping,

  • A multi-person crew will likely be onsite. One team will bring in new windows as the other team removes your existing windows.

  • As the removal of the old windows continues, installation of the new windows will begin.

  • The sash ropes will be cut, and weights will be dropped to the bottom of the window pocket. New windows will be placed into the opening, leveled, and nailed in place.

  • There is no need for supervision on your part. However, periodically check in with your project manager so you can answer any questions they may have.

Depending on the size of your crew, you should expect anywhere from 12 to 15 windows to be removed and replaced at the end of the day. You do not want any windows removed and boarded over. Request each window space be filled with a new window, or ask for the old windows to be left in place if the job moves into a second day.

Window Replacement Installation: Day Two

Most window replacement projects can be completed in a single day. If not, or if you have a more complex job, like installing a bay or bow window, the work may continue for a second day.

Here’s what you can expect if the window replacement installation continues a second day:

  • Installers will arrive early and continue your project, removing and installing windows.

  • When the removal team is finished, they will begin installing exterior trim on your windows. The exterior trim, known as cladding, provides a tight seal against the weather. Depending on your window contractor and your needs, this step may be optional.

  • Your home will be broom-cleaned, and each window will be tested by opening and closing them.

How to Properly Maintain Your Home’s New Windows

Purchasing replacement windows is a big decision that will impact the quality and value of your home. It's important to understand everything about your windows including the best way to care for the glass and window frame, the proper way to clean your windows, and how to properly operate your windows including opening, closing, and locking. Your installation team should cover all of this with you before they leave.
