High Forrest I
Mid-Century Modern Kitchen Design + Frameless Cabinetry
Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Located in the High Forest neighborhood of Tuscaloosa, this mid-century modern home underwent a kitchen transformation that returned its true architectural character. A previous remodel had left the kitchen feeling disjointed from the rest of the home’s unique mid-century style. Our goal was to bring the space back to its roots, blending modern functionality with design elements that honored the home’s original aesthetic.
Mid-Century Modern Kitchen Design
To reconnect the kitchen with the home's mid-century origins, our Toulmin Kitchen & Bath design team introduced reclaimed brick that echoes the charming courtyard just outside the kitchen. This feature became a cornerstone of the design, bringing a sense of continuity and warmth that ties the indoor and outdoor spaces together seamlessly. The reclaimed brick backsplash adds texture and a nostalgic nod to the home’s history, creating a striking focal point that complements the rest of the kitchen.
Sleek, Framless Kitchen Cabinetry & Floating Shelves
For cabinetry, we selected Eclipse frameless cabinets with a reconstituted walnut veneer, a choice that reflects the minimalist and naturalistic sensibilities of mid-century modern design. The cabinetry offers a clean, uninterrupted look that maximizes storage without sacrificing style. Floating shelves with integrated LED lighting add both function and a touch of ambient light, making the kitchen feel open and inviting while keeping everything within easy reach.
We paid careful attention to the small details, choosing Forbes & Lomax invisible switches and outlets that blend seamlessly into the design. These high-quality finishes add to the overall sophistication of the space, ensuring that every element feels considered and intentional. indoor and outdoor spaces.
Reclaimed Brick Backsplash
The kitchen’s reclaimed brick backsplash is a standout feature that adds character and a sense of history, perfectly complementing the home’s mid-century modern aesthetic. The textured brick echoes the courtyard visible just beyond the kitchen, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Durable and Stylish Countertops
The countertops are a blend of Caesarstone Frozen Terra quartz and terrazzo-look surfaces, providing a durable workspace that marries beauty and practicality.
The Caesarstone quartz offers a sleek, polished finish that contrasts beautifully with the terrazzo-look countertops, adding visual interest and a nod to classic mid-century materials.
Timeless Flooring Choices
To maintain continuity with the overall design, we installed quarry tile flooring, which complements the reclaimed brick elements and adds a durable, easy-to-clean surface perfect for a busy kitchen. The quarry tile’s earthy tones tie in with the brick and cabinetry, creating a cohesive look that feels both timeless and modern.
Modern Appliances with a Retro Touch
The kitchen is equipped with GE Cafe appliances that blend modern technology with a hint of retro flair, perfectly aligning with the mid-century theme. These appliances provide the homeowners with the latest in kitchen innovation while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the space.
